HYAK Fiber Optic Network Expansion

Problem & Requirements
Siuslaw Broadband DBA HYAK embarked on a massive, complex initiative to expand its fiber optic network. A project of this magnitude required a reliable utility construction partner capable of handling large-scale underground infrastructure deployment. HYAK needed a contractor who could hit high production targets and manage extensive boring, trenching, conduit installation, and structure placement without sacrificing quality. Furthermore, because the project involved working across various easements, rights-of-way, and residential landscaped areas, HYAK required a team that could navigate community relations respectfully, minimize disruptions, and maintain strict adherence to project schedules and budgets.
The Solution Implemented
Merra stepped in as the key partner for the underground utility construction phase of the expansion. Since January 2025, Merra has executed a highly coordinated, large-scale deployment, installing more than 236,124 feet of conduit and duct infrastructure, hundreds of vaults, flowerpots, and conduit risers, and supporting the installation of thousands of feet of fiber optic cable. Merra tackled the project using a proactive, collaborative approach: - Anticipating Challenges: The team consistently identified potential roadblocks early in the construction process, developing practical solutions alongside HYAK to avoid unnecessary costs and delays. - Meticulous Craftsmanship: Merra maintained high-quality fieldwork across every phase, from initial trenching to final structure placement. - Integrity and Accountability: Merra operated with radical transparency. If unforeseen damage occurred or issues arose, they immediately took ownership, communicated the problem, and worked diligently to make it right. - Community-First Operations: Crews engaged respectfully with property owners, municipalities, and local stakeholders, taking the time to explain project activities and address neighborhood concerns directly.
The Results
- ✓The partnership with Merra Construction set a new standard for quality underground utility construction for HYAK's network expansion.
- Exceptional Production (On-Time & On-Budget)Merra successfully scaled production to lay over 236,124 feet of infrastructure while keeping the complex project strictly on schedule and within budget.
- Superior Restoration (Now vs. Then)Rather than leaving behind the typical scars of heavy construction, Merra ensured that easements, rights-of-way, and landscaped areas were restored to a condition equal to or better than what existed prior to construction.
- Elevated Community RelationsMerra’s exceptional customer service and professional crew conduct generated numerous compliments from homeowners, municipalities, and project stakeholders.
- Unshakeable TrustBy combining high-speed productivity with rare industry integrity, Merra eliminated the friction typically associated with large infrastructure projects, earning HYAK's complete confidence and a strong recommendation for future telecommunications and utility projects.
“Since January 2025, Merra Construction has been a key partner in the expansion of HYAK's fiber optic network, consistently demonstrating a level of performance that sets the standard for quality underground utility construction.
