FCC Updates Broadband Deployment Mapping Requirements
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has updated its broadband deployment data mapping parameters, enforcing a transition from aggregate block submissions to precise spatial data. Providers must now submit high-precision GIS shapefiles detailing exact building-level coverage rather than census-block aggregations. This update introduces the Broadband Serviceable Location Fabric (BSLF), a highly accurate dataset showing all locations in the United States where fixed broadband can be installed.
To comply with these mapping requirements, operators must log and submit sub-meter GIS coordinates for all newly deployed physical assets. This includes the precise geographic layout of conduit routes, fiber hubs, distribution terminals, and splice vaults. The required submission format is strictly defined, mandating GeoJSON or shapefile formats (SHP, SHX, DBF, PRJ) with consistent attribute tables. Each record must specify the technology code (e.g., Code 50 for Fiber-to-the-Home), maximum advertised download/upload speeds, and latency class.
To meet these guidelines, telecommunication contractors must capture precise data during the construction phase.
